Washington to Idaho  Saturday, August 23, 2003

This morning we went back to the Visitor Center at the Dam to watch a movie about its construction and take some pictures.    We were on the road right after lunch.    We went from rugged rock country around the Dam to rolling light gold yellow hills where they cut the alfalfa or hay or whatever and then through mountains and forests.  We stopped in Spokane to buy a few more supplies and stopped in Idaho near a huge beautiful lake in the town of Sandpoint.    Drove through Elmira, IDAHO at 60 mph - good thing we didn't blink.  Our RV park was nice and had some interesting sights.    There were a number of ancient RV’s that had been completely renovated – lots of shiny chrome. Then across from us was an old school bus that had been converted to an RV (maybe permanent home?) – it was a scary-looking thing with plywood sides with various cutouts.

Idaho to Montana  Sunday, August 24, 2003

Finished the short stretch of Idaho and on into the great big square state of Montana. We passed an old drive-in movie theater in Libby, MT that was showing current movies! Wish we could have stayed to go to the drive-in.    We changed into Mountain time going into Montana.    We stopped in West Glacier where you could smell the smoke from the recent terrible fires.    The campground owner told me the entire western half of Glacier National Park burned, plus there were lots of fires outside the park, too.

Montana to ColoradoThursday, August 28, 2003

Sunday night I got one of those “are you sitting down?” calls from my brother and immediately thought of Dad, but no, this time Linda, my sister, had a minor heart attack. We drove straight down to Colorado, arriving yesterday and saw her in the hospital where she is doing great and will be coming home today.   Ben and Keith are doing well, too.    No damage to the heart and she was lucky that she got to the hospital where a heart surgeon just happened to be in the emergency room, so they put in a stent to open up a clogged artery.  She’s the healthy one in the family – eats right, exercises, doesn’t drink or smoke and her blood pressure and cholesterol are low.    Doctor says 40% of heart attacks happen to folks that have no indications – makes you wonder why we bother worrying about cholesterol and diet….We’ll be here a few days to help out any way we can.

Colorado to Iowa to New York to New Jersey to South Carolina  Friday, September 19, 2003

We arrived back here in SC over this last weekend.  After stops to see friends and family in Colorado (Lin is doing much better), Iowa, New York and New Jersey, we made a beeline home with the threat of Hurricane Isabel.  Fortunately, Isabel went further north and we had no problems here.

We logged a little more than 12,000 miles since the end of May.  It has been a fabulous adventure, but we are glad to be home…..to begin planning our next road trip.
