Continued on down the Sterling Highway towards Homer.  Homer is famous for halibut fishing and lies on a bay with glaciated peaks across the water.  We’ve been told to go down to the Spit, a 5-mile narrow piece of land jutting out into the bay where we can camp right on the water.  Well, we did, but it definitely is not as nice as Seward.  Along with the campgrounds and boat harbor are industrial-type businesses – a wood chip factory and some other icky—looking things that spoil the area.  It is much larger than Seward with lots of tourist shops and the mountains are farther away.  It is still pretty to look out on the bay, but there are few birds and not nearly as many boats on the water as Seward.

We decided to take a trip to watch brown (Grizzly) bears.   We took a four-seater putt-putt plane 45 minutes across the bay to the national park, one place where brown bears are frequently seen.  We landed on the beach!    Wow, it was great.

A guy on an ATV picked us up to take us to the lodge (bed and breakfast for us Easterners) where they have a snack of fresh melons, cheese and coffee waiting.  We then set out on the ATV to a local stream to find bear, and find them we did!   About 15 minutes out, we see three bears – one has a fish and the other two are circling, trying to get some, but the largest bear keeps scaring them away.  Just to top this whole thing off, there are two eagles sitting in the tops of pine trees just waiting for their share.  We sat and watched for close to an hour, when the two bears finally gave up and sauntered off.

We then drove to another spot and saw another bear.  We returned to the lodge for delicious home made salmon salad from their home-caught fish and then went back out on the ATV.

We followed a bear fishing in the stream and watched him catch two salmon.  We were able to get very close as he was busy fishing and eating and got some incredible pictures and movies.  We saw where the park ranger stays during the summer and their camp has electrified fencing all around.  Hmmm, made us wonder why we were trying to get close to the bears!  After a couple of hours watching bears and more eagles, we returned to the lodge for fresh out of the oven chocolate chip cookies.

We returned to the beach to await our plane and watched a bear clamming!    When we looked down the beach a little further away, there was a large bear sitting on a log, just looking out to sea.  He sat there for at least ½ hour until our plane landed and scared him off.  What an incredible end to an unforgettable day.
