Grand Junction
July 24, Monday: Montrose, CO to Grand Junction
We drove sixty miles north to the Grand Junction area. Our campground is in Fruita, just west of Grand Junction on I70 and closer to the Colorado National Monument. We stopped at stands on the way for the fabulous Olathe corn and Palisade cherries.
When we arrived at the Colorado National Monument, it was very, very hot – over 100, so we decided to drive through the monument and save the walking for the next morning. The monument is much more spectacular than we expected, even though it is relatively small. It has a little Arches, Canyonlands and Bryce all rolled into one. It was way too hot and little biting bugs (no-see-ums) plagued us while trying to stop at viewpoints, so we returned to the RV for a nice chicken and Olathe corn on the cob dinner.
July 25, Tuesday: Grand Junction, CO
We spent the cooler morning walking through the Colorado National Monument. We stopped at all the overlooks and walked to the viewpoints. We hiked 1½ miles out to the edge of a series of spires – a nice walk, but the temperatures began to climb and by the end of the walk, we were hot and tired.

We went back to the RV for lunch and a nap. Then we drove into little downtown Fruita to find a barbershop for Jack. Jack was not happy with his haircut – scalped on the sides.
