Hannibal, MO

June 15, Thursday:  St. Louis, MO to Hannibal, MO

Leaving the St. Louis area, we took Route 61 north, a good four-lane for most of the way.  After seeing billboard signs for Mark Twain’s home and museum, we decided to stop at Hannibal, MO.  Hannibal is a great little town everything (stores, restaurants, motels) is named after Mark Twain.

Mark Twain’s boyhood home was open for viewing along with a museum that covered the history of his family with lots of memorabilia.  The fence that Tom Sawyer painted was there along with his girlfriend, Becky’s, house.

We took a Mississippi River Boat tour up and down the river for just a couple miles in either direction of Hannibal that included a taped narration of the history and general information about the area.  The day was sunny with a little breeze, making it perfect day for a boat ride.

We’d love to return to the area with the grandchildren, but we’d all have to re-read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn first!
