The North ShoreLake Superior
Two Harbors to Grand Marais

August 16, Tuesday: Two Harbors, MN to Gooseberry Falls, MN (continued)

We had done everything there was to do in Two Harbors, and headed northeast on the North Shore Drive stopping at “World Famous Betty’s Pies” just outside of town – it was packed with people waiting to get take-out and dine in the small diner-style restaurant. We had planned to buy a pie, but they were $16.99! Instead, we bought a slice of apple crumb crust pie for $3.99 to take with us. It was good, but nothing special.

We continued to drive north on the North Shore Scenic Drive and stopped at Gooseberry Falls State Park and nabbed one of the three remaining campsites for the night.  After lunch, we walked to the visitor center to watch a couple of videos about Lake Superior. We then hiked up to the upper, middle and lower falls with pretty views and took lots of photos. Kids were swimming in the water, but it was really cold. We returned to the RV for dinner and quiet time – no hookups here. It rained for an hour or so after dinner. We played games, read and got to sleep early.

August 17, Wednesday: Gooseberry Falls to Tettegouche State Park
Woke up early and hiked downstream through forests full of aspen and birch trees to where the River flows into Lake Superior.

After lunch, we resumed our northward trek up the North Shore Drive where we spotted an interesting flea market.
We browsed the thousands of piece of dinnerware and almost anything else you can think of that is made of glass.

A few miles further north, we stopped at the marina in Beaver Bay for a couple of photos.

We got to Tettegouche State Park a little before lunch, but the Campground was already full. We decided to spend the day there and reserve a campground a little further north in Schroeder for the night. That would allow us to spend the rest of the day exploring Tettegouche and have a guaranteed campsite fairly close by.

Tettegouche, like many of the state parks here, are known for multiple waterfalls and scenic lookouts. We did a lot of uphill and downhill hiking to view the Falls. Jack had to call it quits after the first waterfall because his knees were bothering him.  I continued hiking up to the high falls to get some photographs.

In another part of the park is a scenic hike called Shovel Point. I walked the 1 ½ mile round trip to one of the prettiest dramatic vistas we have seen on the North Shore
Between the earlier hikes and Shovel Point, I hiked more than five miles up and down and was done with walking for the day. We drove to the campsite in Schroeder, had a nice dinner and went to bed early.

August 18, Thursday: Tettegouche to Grand Marais
Before breakfast, we walked a small trail near the campground that followed the Cross River up to a small waterfall. On our return to our campsite, we stopped at a little bakery and bought a sticky bun (good stuff).

We packed up the RV and drove a few miles north to Temperance State Park. I hiked upstream and downstream to view the dramatic gorge area, similar to Watkins Glen. I took lots of photos of all the different waterfalls along the river, but the shadows in the gorge resulted in poor pics.

After lunch, I dropped Jack off at Lake Superior National Golf Course while I drove a few miles up the road to do laundry and check email at the internet café next to the laundromat.

After golf, we stopped at a pretty wayside where I hiked up and down the Cascade River, another beautiful set of waterfalls tumbling through narrow gorges.

Grand Marais is one of the larger villages on the North Shore Drive.  We reserved a site at the municipal campground at the Grand Marais marina. The park was nothing special, but was convenient to downtown Grand Marais. We had a good dinner at the Gunflint Tavern, situated right on the bay. Entertainment was provided by a seaplane practicing its takeoffs and landings right next to the restaurant.
